Bailey Stone
Professor Emeritus

Bailey Stone is Emeritus Professor of European History and International Affairs at the University of Houston. Prior to his time spent at the University of Houston, he taught at Princeton University. He received his B.A. in History (summa cum laude) at Bowdoin College, and then went on to achieve his Ph.D. at Princeton University. Stone is the author of two books on judicial politics in old regime France: The Parlement of Paris, 1774-1789 (U.N.C.–Chapel Hill, 1981) and The French Parlements and the Crisis of the Old Regime (U.N.C.–Chapel Hill, 1986). He also authored two books on the causes and trajectory of the French Revolution: The Genesis of the French Revolution (Cambridge, 1994) and Reinterpreting the French Revolution (Cambridge, 2002). He subsequently published The Anatomy of Revolution Revisited: A Comparative Analysis of England, France, and Russia (Cambridge, 2014), and Rethinking Revolutionary Change in Europe: A Neostructuralist Approach (Rowman & Littlefield, 2020). His articles have appeared in many leading journals, including Eighteenth-Century Studies, French Historical Studies, and the Journal of Modern History. He has also received many prizes in the course of his academic career.

Currently, Stone is a Faculty Research Associate at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and a member of the Five Colleges International Relations Seminar at Amherst. He is preparing yet another book, Gender, Geopolitics, and Women in the Great European Revolutions for likely publication at Rowman & Littlefield, as well as a Chinese translation of The Anatomy of Revolution Revisited.
