Powellson and King work in the Center for Student Involvement and were recognized for their outstanding work the past academic year as the chair and co-chair of the division’s Professional Development Committee. The committee coordinates learning opportunities for staff within the division on trends in higher education, student development, professional growth and other topics tied to the student success mission. In addition, the Professional Development Committee facilitates a mentorship program and also coordinates the Student Affairs and Enrollment Services Awards and Recognition Program.
“We were honored to serve as the co-chairs for the Professional Development Committee for this year,” said Powellson. “This committee of volunteers from across the division made a significant impact in the provision of learning and development opportunities for our staff. We are proud to work with and lead such an amazing team of professionals.”
Throughout the 2018 – 2019 academic year, the Professional Development Committee facilitated 18 programs and activities. While the programs vary in design, these programs engaged over 750 people throughout the year.
“It’s exciting to see how the committee has evolved over the past year with the leadership of Tina and Ja’Nelle,” said Monica Thomson, executive director of University Career Services. “I’ve seen the results from implementing ideas we discussed during my service on the committee such as sharing best practices for writing nomination letters, incorporating feedback from focus groups to improve the awards nomination process, and even adding awards to recognize outstanding staff from across our division.”
“Tina and Ja’Nelle led the committee with little assistance on my part as the advisor to the Professional Development Committee. I did not have a concern as their collective skills, commitment and passion for the work rendered the success achieved by the fully committee,” said Dan Maxwell, associate vice chancellor and associate vice president for student affairs. Dr. Maxwell recently returned to UH following a nine-month interim position as vice president of student affairs at University of Houston – Clear Lake.
Congratulations to Tina and Ja’Nelle!
