Ignite Leadership Program from the Center for Student Involvement Concludes the Semester

The Center for Student Involvement provides students with a wide range of leadership opportunities through the LeadUH program. The Ignite Leadership Program is a cohort-based program that provides students with foundational leadership skills. Throughout the course of the program, students participate in bi-weekly workshops hosted by campus partners.

Workshop topics include Values and Ethics, Diversity and Leadership, Conflict Resolution, and Leadership and Careers. Each workshop provides the students with a range of activities, reflections, and concrete takeaways designed to help develop their leadership skills and the confidence to use these skills in various roles. Members of Ignite also engage in one-on-one interactions with a mentor and participate in social and service activities with a small group of peers.

This semester, despite the challenges our students have faced with COVID-19 and an unexpected finish to the semester, 45 mentees and 12 mentors graduated from Ignite. These students adapted to finishing the program in a virtual environment and successfully completed all requirements needed to graduate. Two students also were recognized with an award for their exceptional performance this semester. The Spark Award is given to a mentee who engages in the program at the highest level, supports their peers, and is consistently looking for new ways to further develop their leadership skills. This semester, the Spark Award was given to Josiah Bruton, a Freshman Human Resources Development Major. The Flame Award is given to a mentor who consistently exceeded expectations and served as a role model for both mentees and mentors. This semester, the Flame Award was given to Katie Trinh, a Senior Public Relations major.

The 57 graduates from Ignite’s 15th cohort now join an alumni base of over 850 previous and current Cougars. The alumni from this program have gone on to be effective in top leadership positions across campus including serving as Presidents of student organizations and participating in campus-wide committees, among numerous other roles. More about the Center for Student Involvement: CSI provides involvement opportunities for students at the University of Houston. Over 500 student organizations are registered with CSI and it is the central location for leadership programs and civic engagement opportunities. CSI staff support six university-sponsored organizations with the planning and implementation of campus programs, events, and traditions. The Center for Student Involvement creates an inclusive and accessible environment that provides meaningful and diverse learning and involvement opportunities to impact student success.
