On May 31, 2023, the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) held its annual Award Ceremony to recognize outstanding individuals and departments who have made significant contributions to student life and their well-being. The event, hosted in the vibrant Student Center South Houston Room, was a resounding success, featuring 20 deserving award winners out of 115 nominations. The ceremony was not only a celebration of achievement but also a testament to the division's commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching campus environment.
Beverly Thom, program manager 1 for the Student Centers, and Carlos Rodriguez, manager of the student center events and sales, expertly led the ceremony as co-chairs and hosts. Their dedication and meticulous planning ensured that the event ran smoothly, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. Thom said, “The Professional Development Committee (PDC) has helped me to grow professionally through this experience and has connected me with some of the best people within the division. I hope to serve on the committee again and look forward to a better year now that I have gained the experience. I am proud to say I work in the Division of Student Affairs.”
The PDC, responsible for organizing the ceremony, transformed the Student Center South Houston Room into a captivating summer-themed venue. Vibrant colors, hula hoops, and decorations evoking a tropical atmosphere set the stage for a memorable and festive occasion. The attention to detail in the decor created a visually stunning environment that radiated warmth and excitement. Rodriguez said, “It was my honor and pleasure to help recognize my fellow colleagues and bring light to their achievements. Thank you all for everything you do to help make the Division of Student Affairs a champion for student success.”
The Professional Development Committee received 115 nominations from across the division, displaying the nominees' diverse talents and dedication. The award recipients were carefully selected by a review panel of non-DSA staff members: Faculty Senate President–Elect Susie Gronseth, Staff Council President Whitney Johnson, Student Government Association President Benjamin Rizk, and Senior HR Business Partner LaTasha Stoker. The award recipients were recognized in various categories, each reflecting the exceptional contributions made by individuals and departments. From outstanding mentors to innovative program organizers, the award winners represented the best of the Division of Student Affairs.
The 2023 DSA Award Ceremony attracted over 200 attendees from across the division. The event served as a unifying platform to celebrate the achievements of their peers. This gathering highlighted the significance of the awards and fostered a sense of camaraderie and pride within the division.
Following the award presentations, Interim Vice Chancellor/Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Daniel Maxwell acknowledged the importance of the Division's work in promoting student success and a holistic, valued added Cougar Experience through the collective effort and commitment of the awardees. Dr. Maxwell's words resonated with the audience, reminding them of the vital role each person plays in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
