Impact of fraternity and sororities recognized at annual Night of Celebration

Every year the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life (CFSL) brings together undergraduate members, alumni, volunteers, and university faculty/staff with the sole purpose of recognizing the impact that fraternities and sororities have on the University of Houston campus at the annual Night of Celebration awards banquet. On Tuesday, February 7th, 2023, the fraternity and sorority community gathered for such a celebration. Fraternities and sororities receive awards and recognition based on academic, program, and leadership achievements from Fall 2021 through Spring 2022. They were also awarded for their performance in the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life Fraternal Excellence Program.

The Fraternal Excellence Program is an effort by the University of Houston Fraternity and Sorority Community to integrate the core principles of fraternity and sorority membership into our campus‐based awards and assessment program. The Center was able to award 18 unique chapters for excellence in different categories including Meaningful Relationships, Intellectual Development, Leadership Development, Service & Citizenship, and Rituals & Values. We also awarded three chapters (Chi Omega, Gamma Rho Lambda, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.) for getting excellence in three areas with the Axia Award, four chapters (Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., Delta Zeta, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.) for excellence in four areas with the Arete Award, and four chapters (Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Phi Mu, and Alpha Chi Omega) with excellence in all five areas with the Archegos Award.

Winners for chapter and individual awards are given for the night were:

  • Highest Fall 2021 Grade Point Average, Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.
  • Highest Spring 2022 Grade Point Average, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.
  • Outstanding Diversity/Inclusion Program, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
  • Outstanding Risk Education Program, Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc.
  • Outstanding Civic Engagement (Community Service), Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
  • Outstanding Civic Engagement (Philanthropy), Lambda Delta Psi
  • Outstanding Chapter Advisor, Byron O'Neal - Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
  • Outstanding Faculty/Staff Advisor, Karl Hearne - Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
  • Outstanding New Member, Asa Lewis -Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
  • Outstanding Executive Officer, Grace Lee - alpha Kappa Delta Phi
  • Greek Leader of the Year, Jordan Booker - Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
  • Greek Leader of the Year, Eliya Cajiles- Delta Zeta & HPC President

Eliya Cajiles, Houston Panhellenic council president and member of Delta Zeta, felt winning Greek Leader of the Year was an unexpected but happy surprise, “It’s nice to know the things that I’ve done are appreciated and noticed by other people.  I’m excited for this year and getting a chance to work with the other council presidents to do more together for the Greek community as a whole”. The award ceremony not only has an impact on students but on the staff and volunteers who help with them as well. Karl Hearne, Outstanding Faculty/Staff Advisor Award winner, and Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Neighborhood and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Houston stated, “I was totally surprised, and it brought me to tears. It meant the world to me that my labor was not in vain. Seeing how successful the chapter is has made it all worthwhile. Working with the chapter these 15 years has been an amazing journey, and we look forward to the future”.
