Every spring break, the University of Houston (UH) Filipino Student Association (FSA) competes in the Goodphil event, a vibrant celebration of Filipino culture and camaraderie. For the third year running, the FSA's Modern (hip-hop) dance team has triumphed, clinching the first-place title amidst stiff competition from FSA groups across Texas. This victory not only reflects the dedication and talent of the University of Houston FSA but also underscores the organization's commitment to promoting Filipino culture on campus.
Established in 1983, the Filipino Student Association at the University of Houston was founded with a clear mission: to promote Filipino culture and heritage among students. Over the years, the organization has evolved into a dynamic community that fosters unity among students of various backgrounds, not limited to those of Filipino descent. Instead, it serves as a cultural beacon, welcoming all who wish to learn and engage with Filipino traditions. Director of the Center for Student Involvement Katy Kaesebier said, “The Filipino Student Association is such a great example of the caliber of registered student organizations we have here at the University of Houston. They are hardworking, talented students who are dedicated to sharing their culture with others through their dance. Every time I have had the opportunity to see FSA perform, I have been impressed, and I am proud of the students and their success in this competition!”
Central to the FSA's mission is its participation in events like Goodphil, which brings together FSA groups from universities across Texas for a weekend of spirited competition and cultural exchange. Goodphil serves as a platform for showcasing talents in cultural performances, sports, and dance, providing an opportunity for students to celebrate their heritage while forging lasting connections with peers.
The University of Houston FSA has consistently excelled at Goodphil, with its Modern dance team emerging as a standout performer year after year. Combining the artistry of hip-hop with elements of Filipino culture, their routines captivate audiences and judges alike, earning them top honors and admiration from their peers. Anthony Menchaca, director of the FSA dance team said, “This would not be achievable without the team's hard work and dedication. I am beyond proud of every single UH Modern member and I am blessed I was able to help lead this team to a historic 3-peat run. We appreciate everyone who has shown us love throughout the years, your support means more than you know!” He credits his Co-Director, Karen Tran, Captains, Matthew Keo, Anthony Vidal, Niala Agudelo, and Assistant Choreographers, Justin Escarlan and Kaylee Cates for their hard work and dedication.
Beyond the thrill of victory, the University of Houston FSA's success at Goodphil speaks to the organization's broader impact on campus. By promoting awareness and appreciation of Filipino culture, the FSA fosters goodwill and understanding among students from diverse backgrounds. Through cultural events, educational workshops, and community service initiatives, the FSA enriches campus life and contributes to a more inclusive and vibrant university community.
As champions of cultural pride and academic excellence, the University of Houston Filipino Student Association continues to uphold its founding principles while embracing the spirit of innovation and inclusivity. With each victory at events like Goodphil, they not only highlight their talent but also inspire future generations to embrace their heritage and strive for greatness in all endeavors.
