A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. Long began his higher education journey at Jacksonville State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. It was during his sophomore year that he discovered his passion for student services, stepping into leadership as a Resident Assistant in the Residential Life and Housing Department. Recognized for his commitment to student welfare, he became an influential member of the Student Government Association, where he chaired the Campus Safety Committee and earned the prestigious Committee of the Year award for two consecutive terms. His leadership extended beyond campus as he served as an Alabama Collegiate Legislature delegate in Spring 2014, drafting and debating legislative bills in the Alabama House of Representatives to advocate for student needs.

Building on his commitment to student development, Mr. Long pursued a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he served as a Graduate Assistant in Housing and Residence Life. There, he managed a community of approximately 700 residents, adjudicated conduct violations through the Maxient software system, and played a pivotal role in training and mentoring 34 resident assistants. His ability to build strong student communities and implement effective policies positioned him as a leader in higher education.

In 2018, Mr. Long took his expertise to St. Mary’s University, where he served as assistant director of Housing and co-investigator for Title IX cases. He also taught the first-year seminar course, equipping first-year students with critical academic skills and resources to navigate college life successfully. His passion for student engagement and academic excellence was evident in his ability to inspire and guide students toward their goals.

Continuing his trajectory of leadership, Mr. Long joined Texas Southern University in 2022 as an assistant director in the Housing Department. In this role, he provided strategic leadership to the Housing and Residential Life Department, working closely with the leasing team and representing the university at key events such as New Student Orientation and StarRez Global Connect. His ability to drive initiatives and create meaningful student experiences further solidified his reputation as an advocate for student success.

Now, as Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Houston, Mr. Long is eager to make a profound impact by providing direct support, resources, and referrals to students facing challenges that may impact their academic journey. His expertise in student affairs, housing, and conduct uniquely positions him to create a culture of support and inclusivity at UH.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Lemonte to the UH Dean of Students team,” said Sara Jahansouz Wray, associate dean of students. “His wealth of experience in student housing and conduct makes him a great fit for the UH community. Lemonte’s energy and desire to support student success make him a natural fit for the Division of Student Affairs.”

Reflecting on his new role, Mr. Long shared his excitement, stating, “I am honored to join the University of Houston and contribute to the success of its students. My goal is to ensure that every student feels supported, empowered, and equipped with the resources they need to thrive. UH is a dynamic and diverse community, and I look forward to building meaningful connections and fostering an environment where students can achieve their full potential.”

With a deep passion for student advocacy and holistic development, Mr. Long is set to redefine student support at the University of Houston. His leadership, experience, and dedication will undoubtedly enhance the student's experience, ensuring that every student has the guidance and resources they need to succeed.
