The third annual Honors Day of Service hosted by the Honors Mentorship Program featured over 50 Honors students serving at four different locations. Students gathered on the morning of October 13, 2018 for breakfast and a discussion of the meaning of service and the importance of building community partnerships. This year’s Day of Service reflected a partnership between The Honors Mentorship Program and the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Leadership Honor Society, the Terry Scholars, and the Bonner Leaders to recruit volunteers and work with community partners.

ODK students fundraised on behalf of Together We Rise, a non-profit organization that strives to improve the experience of foster children in America. On the Day of Service, volunteers decorated duffel bags and filled them with care packages for children in the foster care system.

Mentors and other current Honors students volunteered at the Central Library branch of the Houston Public Library; they developed and updated displays and re-shelved and organized materials.

The Bonner Leaders led the efforts at the Riverside Methodist Church, the future site of a Houston Food Bank branch to serve the University of Houston community. Students helped with various indoor and outdoor projects around the church, and efforts will continue in the future to help prepare for the food bank.

Terry Scholars organized the service project at the Houston Food Bank to assist at the Portwall Warehouse. Students assisted with inspecting and sorting food and repacking dry food into packets.

Community service is an integral part of the life of the College. Catch the spirit of the day in the video below, and learn more about the Honors College at http://www.uh.edu/honors.
