PROGRAM

“A Kaleidoscope of Love” is an exploration of love in many forms, and through a variety of lenses. The love of poetry, art, and the infinite nature of music intertwine as one in the Rumi Settings by Augusta Read Thomas. The love of a parent and young one shine with warmth and depth in the middle movement of William Grant Still’s Suite for Violin and Piano, inspired by the multiple sculptures and paintings titled “Mother and Child” by Sargent Johnson, a prominent artist associated with the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s. Lastly, the Sonata for Violin and Piano by César Franck is the culmination of eros in musical form, a masterpiece that was written for the wedding of Eugene Ysaÿe and explores the many facets of romantic love.
