Faculty Recital: Ravel & Say: Whispers of the Night, Echoes from the Aegean

The Moores School of Music is proud to present a faculty recital by Todd Van Kekerix entitled “Ravel & Say: Whispers of the Night, Echoes from the Aegean.”
This recital brings together two piano suites by Maurice Ravel and Fazıl Say. Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit—inspired by Aloysius Bertrand’s poems—ranks among the piano repertoire’s most technically challenging works. Its three movements—“Ondine,” “Le Gibet,” and “Scarbo”—brim with haunting imagery and effortlessly evoke orchestral colors at the piano. Fazıl Say’s Izmir Suite bridges classical forms with vibrant Turkish flair, channeling the atmosphere of the Aegean metropolis in each movement. Three homage movements draw on the styles of Brahms, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff while quoting “İzmir Marşı,” a well-known Turkish ceremonial march commemorating the 1922 liberation of Izmir during the Turkish War of Independence.
