Jim Johnson
Interim Director of School of Theatre & Dance, Head of BFA Acting, Professor, Voice & Accents
Jim Johnson is a professor of voice and accents at the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance, where he serves as the head of the BFA Acting program and teaches Voice and Accents for the BFA and MFA actors. Jim previously served as the Director of the School of Theatre & Dance from 2013 – 2016. He works professionally as a voice and dialect coach, and is a founder of AccentHelp, which offers over 50 sets of materials for different accents and dialects. Jim teaches and performs annually with the summer training institute of the Prague Shakespeare Company, where he is an Artistic Associate. Each year, AccentHelp works with the Prague Shakespeare Company to provide a full-ride Diversity and Inclusion scholarship for a UH acting student to attend the Summer Shakespeare Intensive in the Czech Republic. He is an associate teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, an associate editor for the International Dialects of English Archive and a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association. He received his M.F.A. in acting from the University of Nebraska — Lincoln. He formerly served on the faculty of The Theatre School of DePaul University and taught at the Audition Studio in Chicago, Illinois. He is currently represented by Pastorini-Bosby Talent Agency and is a member of Actors’ Equity.
