After a distinguished career marked by leadership, innovation, and dedication, Stephen Spann, M.D., M.B.A., Founding Dean of the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine and Vice-President for Health Affairs has announced his retirement from the University of Houston, closing a remarkable chapter in the history of the institution. His guidance has been instrumental in shaping the College of Medicine, growing it from inception to its first graduating class.

Looking back on his tenure at the College, Spann remembers the challenges of launching the medical school during the height of the COVID pandemic. He recalls the pride of witnessing milestones such as the first White Coat Ceremony of 2020, held with strict Covid safety protocols, and also watching the students’ advancement through their rigorous medical training. "Handing diplomas to the Class of 2024 graduates was a moment of immense joy," said Spann, who also cherished the opportunities to teach, mentor, and watch students grow through the challenges of medical education.

Spann's career in the medical field spans decades, and he has been involved in medical education at several institutions, but the opportunity to build a new medical school from the ground up was a unique and fulfilling experience. "Designing a medical school that meets the needs of Houston, with a distinctive focus and curriculum, was deeply satisfying. I’m proud of the progress we've made and look forward to seeing the mission continue to thrive."

Throughout his career, Spann has worn many hats—from a rural country doctor in Arkansas and North Carolina to dean of two medical schools and Chief Medical Officer of a major teaching hospital abroad in the United Arab Emirates. Further establishing his leadership in international health care, he has worked extensively in the development of Family Medicine across Latin America and other global regions. Despite his administrative roles, Spann remains passionate about patient care, continuing to see patients and valuing the relationships he's built over the years as a primary care physician.

As he embraces his next steps into retirement, Spann plans to stay active in the health care field, focusing on volunteer work, consulting and possibly living abroad again to contribute to global health initiatives. "I’m excited about the next chapter and continuing to make a difference in health care, both locally and globally."

Reflecting on his legacy at the College of Medicine, Spann hopes to be remembered by his teamwork, integrity, passion and kindness. "This medical school was built by a dedicated team, and I’m honored to have been a part of it."

Spann’s retirement is set to begin on September 1st , 2024, and while he may be stepping down from his current role, his contributions to health care are far from over. He looks forward to continuing his work in underserved communities and improving health care locally and around the world.
