Finances and Funding
Tuition and Fees
Graduate tuition and fees vary depending on your department, your residence status, your graduate level, and the courses you’re taking.
Use the UH Graduate Tuition Calculator to estimate your tuition and fees for each semester.
For international student I-20 purposes, you can also use the I-20 calculator spreadsheet (we are College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics)
Funding
There are multiple methods by which you can fund your education. Graduate funding is available in the form of assistantships, scholarships and fellowship. In addition, there are numerous external resources available for students to obtain funding for their respective programs.
Graduate Assistantships: encompass the positions of teaching fellow, teaching assistant, instructional assistant, research assistant, and graduate assistant. Graduate students must meet minimal university requirements to be eligible for a graduate assistantship.
Scholarships/Fellowships: a variety of graduate scholarships/fellowships exist such those offered by the university, college and department. Scholarships/fellowships also exist external to the university such as those provided by corporations, non-profits, and professional organizations.
MS Funding
MS Computer Science students in our department are typically admitted unfunded. Those pursuing the research/thesis option may be considered (not guaranteed) for a small scholarship or assistantship depending on available funding. However, departments outside of Computer Science occasionally hire MS Computer Science students for various assistantship roles. MS students can seek such opportunities upon their arrival to campus and via CougarPathway.
PhD Funding
PhD Computer Science students in our department are typically admitted with funding. The details of such funding will be included in the admissions offer letter. Typical funding includes the following:
- Part-time graduate assistantship (e.g. TA or RA)
- Graduate Tuition Fellowship - funds up to 9 hours of in-state tuition and mandatory fees
- Non-Resident Tuition Waiver - waives the non-resident tuiton for students who are non-Texas residents or international.
Exceptional PhD applicants are also reviewed for a Presidential Fellowship. Only students of exceptional caliber who represent extraordinary recruitment opportunities will receive these fellowships. Visit the NSM graduate scholarships page for details.
