Geology graduate student Jack McLaughlin of the University of Houston’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences received the $2,500 Gene M. Shoemaker Graduate Scholarship Award. It was presented by Henry Wise, President of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) Texas section. McLaughlin also received a plaque and a copy of the book, Shoemaker by Levy: The Man Who Made an Impact by David H. Levy.

McLaughlin entered the master’s program after graduating magna cum laude from UH with a B.S. in geology. He plans to study the ability to trace oil field brine contamination of shallow aquifers using groundwater chemistry and clay compositions.

The AIPG, founded in 1963, is the largest association dedicated to supporting professional geologists in the U.S. The AIPG-TX section awards scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students from Texas universities. Students are selected for the scholarship by an AIPG-TX committee.
