Elevating the Pharmacy School Journey

Pharm.D. Student Pursues Passion for Pharmacy, Mentorship

University of Houston College of Pharmacy (UHCOP) Pharm.D. student Aryonne Gibson began her journey in higher education at a historically black college/university, an experience she describes as “transformative.”

“Seeing faces that resembled mine in positions of power was motivating,” Gibson said. “I felt at home and free to be unapologetically myself.”

Staying close to her family was a priority for Gibson, leading her to look at UH to continue her education after completing her undergraduate education.

“The advanced technology and sense of comfort provided by the community at UH won me over,” Gibson said.

A self-described engineer and creator since childhood, entering pharmacy school was the perfect fit for Gibson. Her decision to attend UHCOP was solidified during a memorable moment at her White Coat Ceremony.

“I was pleasantly surprised to see a number of individuals who shared my identity, and this further fueled my excitement to be a part of UHCOP,” Gibson said.

Attending the Student National Pharmaceutical Association Regional Conference as a P1 also made a lasting impact on Gibson as it provided her with a sense of belonging within the pharmacy profession through the interactions she had with students and professionals from different schools.

In addition to pharmacy, Gibson has another passion project she is cultivating: a mentorship program called Mentoring ElevatEd Minds, inspired by her own positive mentorship experiences she was exposed to throughout her education. Presented on Instagram, Gibson offers information on online resources and learning tools to help students from high school all the way to professional school navigate educational pathways and serve as a source of guidance and support.

“I plan to transform Mentoring ElevatEd Minds into a thriving mentorship program with workshops and events to provide valuable education and support for students,” Gibson said.

As she continues her studies at UHCOP, Gibson feels strongly about the type of pharmacist she will become. “Going the extra mile” is not just a buzz phrase to Gibson; she said it’s the core of her being.

“I will advocate for patients and strive to provide equity for underrepresented communities which is crucial to address health care inequalities and improve health outcomes,” Gibson said.

Additionally, Gibson aspires to advocate for diversity and foster an inclusive environment in the field of pharmacy.

“For fellow Black students, I aim to be a source of inspiration, breaking barriers and encouraging them to pursue their aspirations in pharmacy with confidence,” Gibson said.
