Driving the Energy Transition: Episode 4
Title: Challenges of transitioning to renewable not using fossil energy fuels
Teaser (Joe): Today we ask why not simply stop using fossil fuels?
Open (Recorded Intro): This is UH Energy – Driving the Global Energy Transition.
Body:
Fossil fuels are a major cause of global warming, so why not just stop using them? Less than 8% of global energy comes from wind and solar power today. Generating then storing renewable energy via batteries is often more expensive, and can require more space than using coal, oil, or natural gas for commercial applications. Changing infrastructure to shift away from fossil fuels or capture the carbon from their use requires massive investment—around $4 trillion per year -- almost half of the discretionary income of the wealthiest 20% of the world. The energy transition will take time, commitment and effort, but it is necessaryneeded for the health of our planet.
I'm Joe Powell at the University of Houston Energy Transition Institute.
