The Cougar Card is the official UH (University of Houston) identification and access card. It is important to carry and safeguard your Cougar Card as it is the preferred method to transact on campus. The Cougar Card is used to access academic and administrative buildings, computer labs, Campus Recreation & Wellness Center, on- and off-campus residential housing, MD Anderson Library, as well as athletic and special events. Meal plans, Cougar Cash, and ShastaBUCKS can also be used with the Cougar Card.  For more information on where you can use your Cougar Card, click here
Yes, all students, faculty and staff must submit a photo through Cougar Card Connect in AccessUH to receive a Cougar Card. Once you receive an email confirming the approval of your photo submission, you will have to schedule an appointment or join the virtual queue for same day service through the CougarQ for pick up. CougarQ is available in AccessUH.
Photo requirements can be found here. Please review these prior to submitting your photo. Once you have submitted your photo, please allow 2-3 business days for your photo to be reviewed. You will receive an email indicating whether your photo was approved. If your photo was not approved, the email will explain why your photo was denied, and you will have the opportunity to upload a new photo. You can also see your approved photo through AccessUH by clicking the Cougar Card Connect icon.

Immediately deactivate your Cougar Card by selecting the “Deactivate Card” option in the Cougar Card section of the UH Go mobile app or log on to AccessUH and select the Cougar Card icon. Select Account Management, then click Lost/Stolen Card followed by Deactivate then click Confirm.  

All Cougar Card deactivations are final. Cougar Cards cannot be reactivated once the deactivation has been completed. Once your card has been deactivated, you can pick up your replacement card by scheduling an appointment or joining the virtual queue for same day service through the CougarQ icon in AccessUH. The $20 replacement fee must be paid in the office before a replacement card can be issued. We accept credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ShastaBUCKS. The Cougar Card Office does not accept cash payments. 

Please allow 2-3 business days for your photo to be reviewed. Once you receive your approval email, you will be able to schedule an appointment or join the virtual queue for same day service to pick up your Cougar Card.

Cards no longer working due to damage from normal wear and tear are considered damaged or worn. You may exchange the damaged or worn card for a new card free of charge. However, you must bring in your damaged or worn card when picking up the new card. If the card is damaged due to neglect or intentionally placing holes in the card, the cardholder will be charged the current replacement cost. You can schedule an appointment through the CougarQ in AccessUH or join the virtual queue for same day service to pick up your card.

Yes, there is a $20 fee that will need to be paid in the Cougar Card Office before a replacement card can be issued. Once your card has been deactivated, you can schedule an appointment through the CougarQ in AccessUH or join the virtual queue for same day service to pick up your card. We accept credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ShastaBUCKS. The Cougar Card Office does not accept cash payments. 

The Cougar Card Office does not accept cash. We accept all major credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ShastaBUCKS.

Our office cannot change your name or classification. The name and classification that appears on your Cougar Card will be the information in your myUH Self Service account located in AccessUH. If you need to change your name or update your preferred name, please update your information in myUH Self Service before scheduling an appointment to pick up your card.

To assign someone to pick up your card, you will need to email the Cougar Card Office at cougarcard@uh.edu. Once your assigned proxy takes possession of your Cougar Card, the Cougar Card Office will not be liable for loss or damage. Be sure to verify that you have submitted a photo online, it has been approved, and that all your personal information is correct by logging into AccessUH, then click myUH Self Service and review Personal Details. You will also need to set an appointment or join the virtual line for the person picking it up, as we do not accept walk-ins. 

To avoid delays receiving your card, we recommend that you pick up your Cougar Card from the Cougar Card Office directly. However, if you wish to have your physical card mailed to you, you will need to contact the Cougar Card Office at cougarcard@uh.edu.

Before making your request, verify that all your personal information is correct, including your mailing address, by logging into AccessUH , then click MyUH Self Service and review Personal Details and Addresses.

Once your Cougar Card has been mailed, the Cougar Card Office is not liable for any lost or undelivered cards. You will need to pay a $20 replacement fee for a new card to be issued if your card is not received at the destination address.

Yes, you can change the photo on your Cougar Card. However, please note that the is a $20 fee for replacing the card with the updated photo. The fee must be paid in-person at the Cougar Card Office prior to issuing your new card. We accept credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ShastaBUCKS.

If you have recently changed your legal name, please contact the Cougar Card Office for requests to update your Cougar Card.

Alumni cards must be obtained through the University of Houston Alumni Association. The Cougar Card Office does not manage or issue alumni cards. For questions regarding alumni cards, please visit the Alumni Association website at houstonalumni.com/alumnicard or visit the UH Alumni Association at 3204 Cullen Blvd in Houston. You can also email at alumni@uh.edu or call 713-743-9550.

For meal plans, Cougar Cash, ShastaBUCKS, and parking, your card will work immediately. For building access, you will need to wait 30-60 minutes for your access to transfer to your new card.  

For residential students, if access is not active after 60 minutes, you may need to contact the front desk to re-encode access.  

For faculty and staff, if you have problems with building access, contact your supervisor or the building coordinator to get your access reassigned.

Once you receive your letter of retirement from HR, schedule an appointment or join the virtual queue for same-day service through the CougarQ portal in AccessUH. You will need to bring your letter of retirement with you for confirmation. 

If you would like to update your photo, you will need to upload your the new photo through the Cougar Card Connect portal in AccessUH before visiting our office.  

Please note, the Cougar Card Office is unable to issue a retiree card until the retirement effective date.  

Special Program is a classification that applies to university-affiliated contractors, consultants, and non-degree seeking students. Before beginning the request, the cardholder should have an active person of Interest (POI) and must have been issued a PSID. The UH sponsor will need to process the POI through their department business office.

Once the cardholder has been issued a PSID, they can follow these steps to get their Special Program Cougar Card:

1. Submit your Cougar Card photo.
a. If the cardholder has been provided with AccessUH credentials, they will be able to submit their photo through AccessUH in the Cougar Card Connect portal.
 
b. If the cardholder does not have AccessUH credentials, the cardholder must email their photo to cougarcard@uh.edu. Please include the cardholder's first name, last name, and PSID in the body of the email. Please do not include a photo of the cardholders' government ID in any email correspondence.
 
Be sure to review the photo requirements before submitting the photo.
 
2. Once you have received an email confirmation from the Cougar Card Office that the photo has been uploaded, the cardholder will be able to set an appointment to pick up your card. 
 
a. If the cardholder has AccessUH credentials, they can make an appointment or join the virtual line through the CougarQ portal in AccessUH. 
 
b. If the cardholder does not have AccessUH credentials, they join through CougarQ Guest

3. There is a $20 fee for all Special Program Cougar Cards.
 
a. The fee can be paid by the cardholder at the time of pickup. The Cougar Card Office only accepts credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ShastaBUCKS as forms of payment.
 
b. If the fee is to be paid by a UH department, the UH sponsor must initiate the process by completing the Special Programs Cougar Card Request Form before the cardholder can schedule their appointment. The UH department will receive an invoice that must be completed and returned to the Cougar Card Office for payment.  
 
4. The cardholder must bring a government issued ID at the time of pickup to confirm their identity if their photo was emailed. They will also need to complete the Cougar Card Terms and Conditions in office. 
 
a. If the cardholder was able to submit their photo through the Cougar Card Connect portal, this step will be bypassed, since it's completed during the photo submission process. 

If your Cougar Card has suddenly stopped working for your residence hall or room, the first thing you should do is contact the front desk at your residence hall. They will need to check that your access is still active and that the reader is functional. The Cougar Card Office does not assign or remove building or room access. 

If your card is still not working, you can schedule an appointment or join the virtual line through AccessUH in the CougarQ portal. Select the damaged card option when prompted. You must bring your damaged card with you to the office. Once you arrive at the office, we will check the smart chip and magnetic stripe on your card for any issues. If either function has stopped working due to normal wear and tear, we will issue a new Cougar Card. 

If your card has stopped working on the weekend or after office hours, your residence hall will be able to provide you with a temporary card or you can also visit UHPD and be issued a temporary card. The temporary cards can be assigned building and room access and will also be linked to your meal plan and parking permit. Both of these options are temporary, you will still need to set an appointment to visit the Cougar Card Office the next business day to have your card checked and reissued. 

Remember, you may also use your digital card located in the UHGo app for meal plan, parking garage entry (Welcome Center Garage excluded), and ShastaBUCKS and Cougar Cash transactions.

Printing accounts are assigned to all actively enrolled students each semester for printing labs with a declining balance. Each labs allocation expires at the end of each semester. 

Actively employed faculty and staff will be allocated by MD Anderson each semester.

You can check your printing account balances through Cougar Card Connect in AccessUH. Then, click "Account Management," followed by "Balances and Transactions" to view account balances and recent transactions.

You may also check your current balances through our UH Go app. Once you have signed in, tap on the Cougar Card icon then tap "Account Info," followed by tapping on "Balances."

Yes! Your University of Houston ID (UHID) and PeopleSoft ID (PSID) are used interchangeably.

Yes, your current card is valid for your entire time at the University of Houston!

cougar-card-connectThe Cougar Card Connect icon is located in your AccessUH portal. Just log in and look for it on your main dashboard.

If you're taking online classes, you're not required to have a physical Cougar Card. As long as you upload your photo through the Cougar Card Connect icon in AccessUH and it's approved, your digital Cougar Card will be available in the UH Go app! You can use it for access to places like the M.D. Anderson Library, or to purchase a parking permit if you ever come to campus.

No worries if you don't have a government-issued ID just yet! We also accept high school IDs as valid proof of identification and temporary IDs issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Your Cougar Card is activated immediately after printing for all applicable privileges. If you're waiting for individual access privileges, please allow about 30 minutes. If you have any concerns or issues, you might want to check with the Cougar Card Office to ensure everything is set up correctly.

Hey Coog!  Yes, you will need an appointment or join the virtual line for same-day service through the CougarQ on AccessUH to pick up your Cougar Card. Walk-ins are not permitted.

Yes, Adroit temporary employees are eligible for a Cougar Card.

The Cougar Card Office does not accept walk-ins. To receive prompt service, you have two options: 

  1. Schedule an appointment for a future date.
  2. Join our virtual line for same-day service via CougarQ on AccessUH.

If you are a commuter student, you will need to either schedule an appointment or join our virtual line for same-day service via CougarQ in AccessUH to pick up your Cougar Card. Here are the steps:

  1. Complete the online photo submission in AccessUH by selecting the Cougar Card Connect icon. 
  2. Receive an email confirmation that your photo has been approved
  3. Schedule an appointment or join the virtual line to pick up your card through CougarQ in AccessUH.

Please make sure you're enrolled in at least one class in the current semester in order to be issued a card!

To reschedule your appointment to pick up your Cougar Card, you can use the CougarQ on AccessUH. From there, you can cancel your current appointment and book a new one for a different day!

Hey Coog!  Good news — if your Cougar Card hasn’t been printed yet, you won't need to pay the $20 replacement fee. You can still upload a new photo at no charge. For additional assistance, please email as at cougarcard@uh.edu

No need to get a new Cougar Card every school year! Your current card is valid throughout your time at the University of Houston. You'll only need a replacement if your card is lost or damaged.

Need to pick up someone else's Cougar Card? Here's how:

  1. Authorization Email
    The cardholder must email the Cougar Card Office at cougarcard@uh.edu from their UH email address. The email should include:
    1. Their full name and UHID number
    2. The full name of the person authorized to pick up the card
  2. Verification at Pickup
    The authorized person (proxy) must bring a government-issued ID or their Cougar Card for verification.
  3. Important Notes
    1. Once the Cougar Card is picked up by the proxy, the Cougar Card Office is not liable for any loss or damage.
    2. The cardholder must ensure:
      1. Their photo has been uploaded and approved
      2.  Their personal information is correct by logging into AccessUH, selecting myUH Self Service, and reviewing Personal Details
      3. An appointment is scheduled or they’ve joined the virtual line for the proxy’s visit — walk-ins are not accepted

Hey Coog! Once a card is deactivated, we are unable to reactivate it. You can find more information about this policy in our FAQ section.

You will need to get a new Cougar Card by setting up an appointment or joining our virtual line for same-day assistance through the CougarQ and paying the $20 replacement fee during your visit. The Cougar Card Office is a cashless office, but we accept all major credit/debit cards, tap-to-pay, and ShastaBUCKS.

If you are a current student, faculty, or staff member and have already uploaded your photo through the Cougar Card Connect icon, you don't need to bring anything when picking up your Cougar Card.

However, if you are a contractor (classified as special program) and were unable to upload your photo through Cougar Card Connect, you must present a valid government-issued ID. Accepted forms include:

  • U.S. or foreign passport/visa
  • U.S. driver's license
  • U.S. state or federal-issued ID
  • U.S. military card
  • Permanent resident card.

Once predetermined print allocations in your printing accounts are depleted, adding funds to your ShastaBUCKS account will ensure on-going printing privileges.

Digital Cougar Card FAQ

The digital Cougar Card is in the form of a QR code and is available in the UH Go app. It can be used to access the approved gated parking location, the MD Anderson Library, and for meal plan, Cougar Cash, and ShastaBUCKS transactions.
If you have deactivated your physical Cougar Card in the Cougar Card Connect portal or UH Go app, then your ability to use the digital Cougar Card would be limited. The digital Cougar Card could still be used to enter and exit parking garages and gated lots. Meal plans would not be available. The digital Cougar Card would not be able to be used to enter the MD Anderson Library.
The digital Cougar Card QR code is tied to the card number listed on your physical Cougar Card. In order to get a new QR code, you would need to get a new physical card with a new card number. There is a $20 fee to replace a Cougar Card.
Yes. In order to access and use your digital Cougar Card QR code, you simply need to have uploaded your Cougar Card photo and received an email notification from the Cougar Card Office that your photo has been approved.
To access and use your digital Cougar Card QR code, you will need to have the UH Go app downloaded and log in with your CougarNet credentials. Within the UH Go app, you will see your photo and Cougar Card number. Tapping on that image will take you to the digital Cougar Card screen where you can generate the QR code to use.
No, your digital Cougar Card QR code is unique to you and should not be shared as stated on the Cougar Card Terms and Conditions. It can be used to access your assigned parking garage, campus services, meal plan, and make Cougar Cash and ShastaBUCKS transactions. Sharing your QR code could lead to unauthorized use and temporary loss of privileges. Always keep your digital and physical Cougar Card secure, just like a government ID.

 

ShastaBUCKS FAQ

ShastaBUCKS is a University of Houston debit account. This account functions just like a traditional debit card; it can be used at participating on-campus locations and Grubhub. This account is placed on all Cougar Cards but only becomes active when money is deposited.

You can conveniently add ShastaBucks on the UH Go app by tapping the "Cougar Card" icon, tapping on "Account Info", and then on "Add Cash" option.

You can also make a deposit online in AccessUH by clicking the Cougar Card Connect icon. 

ShastaBUCKS cannot be transferred to Cougar Dining Dollars.

ShastaBUCKS can be used at Eric's Restaurant & Bar, Shasta's Cones & More, printing labs, beverage and snack vending machines, the campus bookstore, and off-campus Grubhub.

Residential Student FAQ

Welcome to the Cougar Family!

We are excited to have you joining us this semester.

There are a few things you should do before attending New Student Orientation:

  1. Review your personal information on the self-service portal. If you have a preferred name you would like to appear on your Cougar Card you can update it by logging into AccessUH, then click MyUH Self Services. You will be able to add a name and set it as your preferred name in the Personal Details section. When it’s time to get your Cougar Card let the representative know you would like to use your preferred name on the card.
  2. Make sure you follow the photo requirements for your photo before uploading it.
  3. Upload your photo by going to AccessUH and clicking on the Cougar Card Connect portal. Please allow 2-3 business days for your photo to be reviewed.
  4. Uploading your photo before orientation will help expedite your Cougar Card process during orientation pick up.
  5. Remember you will need to have your Cougar Card for move-in!

Welcome to our on-campus housing!

You will use your Cougar Card for check-in, on-campus dining, and access to your resident hall. Your Cougar Card is a vital part of your campus life, it provides access to sporting events, some special events, MD Anderson Library, Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, computer and printing labs, academic and administrative buildings, and on-campus dining locations.

If you don’t have your Cougar Card yet, follow these steps to getting your first Cougar Card:

  1. Submit a photo through Cougar Card Connect in AccessUH.
  2. Once your photo has been approved, you can schedule an appointment to pick up your card. We’ll see you at the Cougar Card Office at the time of your appointment!

Yes, Coog, if you are living on campus and participating in move-in day, you can absolutely pick up your Cougar Card. No appointment or virtual line is needed during move-in week for residents. 

For students living on campus, we will have a Resident Pickup Station set up outside the Cougar Card Office, open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during move-in, to help speed up the process. 

Just make sure to upload your photo before your move-in day, so we can have your Cougar Card printed and ready for you!

Residents have the option to pick up their Cougar Card prior to move-in day.  This allows for a smoother check-in experience and helps avoid delays during move-in. 

Welcome back!

Make sure that you visit the Cougar Card Office to pick up a replacement before your scheduled move-in date, so there is no delay in your check-in process.

You will need to schedule an appointment to pick up your replacement Cougar Card through CougarQ in AccessUH. There is a $20 replacement fee for lost cards that must be paid in office. Once you arrive for your appointment you will need to pay the replacement fee. We accept all major credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and ShastaBUCKS. The Cougar Card Office does not accept cash.

If you lose your Cougar Card during the semester and it’s after Cougar Card Office hours, you still have options!

  1. Visit the front desk at your residential hall to get a Guest Card that will give you access to your room or building.
  2. Visit the UHPD office to request a Temporary After-Hours Cougar Card. You will need a valid form of identification and to sign an agreement form. UHPD will verify that you are a current student and issue a temporary card. All UHPD temporary cards must be returned to the Cougar Card Office when you pick up your new card. If you fail to return the temporary card you will have to pay a $20 fee for the temporary card plus the $20 replacement fee.

Both these options are only temporary. You will still be responsible for getting a permanent replacement for your lost Cougar Card. There is a $20 replacement fee for all Cougar Card replacements that must be paid at the time of pickup. We accept all major credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and ShastaBUCKS. The Cougar Card Office does not accept cash.
