CLASS Event Calendar
- April 1-13 – School of Art MFA exhibition at the Blaffer Art Museum
- April 11 – Scholarship Awards Reception honoring the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication students. The event is from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the Funston Communication Center inside the Valenti building. Tickets are $25.
- April 13 – Dollars for Scholars art auction to raise money for student scholarships for the School of Art. Items for sale include works by Luis Jimenez, Michael Ray Charles, the Art Guy and UH faculty members. The event is from 7 -10 p.m. at The Station Museum, 1502 Alabama. Tickets start at $125.
- April 14 – The Religious Studies Program presents Christian musician/historian Kemper Crabb in a benefit concert featuring medieval music performed for contemporary listeners. 7 p.m. 1548 Heights Blvd. at 16th Street, Houston, TX 77008. Suggested donation: $35. UH students, faculty and staff: $10.

CLASS Alums Making News
José Ángel Hernández, an associate professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst is a recipient of the inaugural William M. LeoGrande Prize for the best book on U.S.-Latin American relations published during the 2011-12 academic year awarded by American University’s School of Public Affairs and Center for Latin American and Latino Studies. Dr. Hernández earned his master of art degree from the Department of History in 2000 and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago in 2008.

Robin Reagler, executive director of Writers in the Schools (WITS) in Houston, has been elected as the Individual Members’ Representative on the Board of Directors for the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP.) Her four-year term ends in 2016. Dr. Reagler was awarded in 1995 her Ph.D. in Creative Writing and Poetry from the Department of English.

Loretta Devine, the Emmy and NAACP Image award-winning actress, was profiled in Houston Modern Luxury magazine ahead of the April 27 gala where she will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Houston Alumni Association. Ms. Devine earned a speech and drama bachelor’s degree in 1971 from the School of Theatre & Dance.

Jacqueline Baly, president and CEO of BalyProjects, will also be honored at the UH Alumni Association gala on April 27. A 1990 graduate with a B.S. in political science, Ms. Baly is being honored with Rising Star Award, which recognizes young alumni who have excelled early in their careers. She teaches public policy and urban politics at the University of Houston-Downtown and is the former Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Sugar Land.
