This fall, Dr. Rohini Divecha, along with husband Vishnu, decided to give back to Houston in an area that is Rohini Divecha’s passion—economics.
Rohini and Vishnu donate to many causes, from American Red Cross to UNICEF; several years ago Vishnu, an industrial engineer and engaged alumnus of the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, created an endowed scholarship at UH in his field of study. He next encouraged Rohini to consider doing the same for Economics students. Together they established the Rohini and Vishnu Divecha Economics Scholarship Endowment at the University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
Dr. Rohini Divecha was born in India and came to the U.S. to study at Kansas State University, where she earned her M.A. in Economics in 1963. She earned her Ph.D. in Economic History and International Economics at Bryn Mawr College in 1976, while working full time at an area college. The following year, she and Vishnu moved to Houston, where they raised daughter Ami and where Rohini spent the next 35 years teaching economics for undergraduates and graduate students at HCC, Prairie View University and San Jacinto College. She has delighted in teaching her students-- and now, nurturing the next generation of emerging economists at University of Houston.
