Severe Weather
Severe weather has the potential to occur year-round in Houston. Thunderstorms can bring strong winds, tornadoes, hail, lightning and flash flooding.
Weather Definitions
Watch: A watch is used when the risk of a hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location or timing is still uncertain. It is intended to provide enough lead time so those who need to set their plans in motion can do so. A watch means that hazardous weather is possible and to stay prepared.
Advisory: An advisory is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, imminent or likely. Advisories are for less serious conditions than warnings, that cause significant inconvenience and if caution is not exercised, could lead to situations that may threaten life or property.
Warning: A warning is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, imminent or likely. A warning means weather conditions pose a threat to life or property. People in the path of the storm need to take protective action. Seek shelter immediately.
Weather Events
Tornado
- Go into an interior room or hallway on lowest floor, if possible
- Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls
- A vehicle or modular building is not good protection. Plan to go quickly into a building with a strong foundation, if possible
- Stay in the shelter location until "All Clear" has been given
Lightning
- Try to seek shelter indoors or under a protective roof if lightning is in the area
- If stuck outside, avoid bodies of water and other objects that conduct electricity
