Alumni Erik Tosh, A.J. Day Elected to Leadership Positions in International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists

UH College of Pharmacy alumni Erik Tosh, B.S. ('91), R.Ph., FIACP, FACA, and A.J. Day, Pharm.D. ('07), R.Ph., were installed as president and director, respectively, for the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists Board of Directors during the IACP Education Conference 2018 held Jan. 24-27 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Serving as vice president, Professional Services of Letco Medical, Tosh has nearly 40 years of experience in health care, including the past 32 years in pharmacy. In addition to his B.S. in Pharmacy from UHCOP, Tosh earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology and an associate's degree in Environmental Health. A Fellow of IACP and the American College of Apothecaries, Tosh is a past president and treasurer and current director on the IACP Foundation Board of Directors.

Prior to entering pharmacy practice, Tosh served six years in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman specializing in Public Health, and Environmental Health and Safety.

While attending UHCOP, Tosh worked as a pharmacy technician at Houston Methodist Hospital. Much of his experience at Methodist was in the preparation of total parenteral nutrition and other sterile compounded solutions for an intensive care unit. In the community practice setting, Tosh worked closely with physicians to develop treatment plans for patients utilizing compounded preparations, primarily in hospice care and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

He has written articles for the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, reviewed monographs for the United States Pharmacopeia, and contributed a monograph to Remington The Science and Practice of Pharmacy, 22nd Edition.

A co-developer of the UHCOP pharmacy elective in herbal medicine, Tosh has lectured on herbal medicine, compounding, and other general pharmacy practice topics at colleges of pharmacy, state, and national pharmacy professional meetings. He has served as preceptor for the UHCOP, the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, The University of Texas College of Pharmacy, and Texas A&M University College of Pharmacy.

Day is a consultant pharmacist and director of Clinical Services at Houston-based PCCA. His practice focus areas include veterinary compounding, aseptic compounding, pain management, regulatory compliance, and compounding technique.

Over the course of his career, Day has had the privilege of providing continuing education (CE) and non-CE presentations to thousands of veterinarians, physicians, and pharmacists around the world. He has provided expert testimony to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration on behalf of the compounding profession on multiple occasions.

In addition to his membership in IACP and continuing service on the IACP Foundation Board of Directors, Day is active in the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists, National Community Pharmacists Association (currently serving on its Compounding Expert Committee), American Pharmacists Association, and the Texas Pharmacy Association as well as previously serving on the Texas Pharmacy Foundation Board of Trustees. He is also a Lieutenant in the Texas State Guard Medical Brigade.

As a preceptor for colleges of pharmacy across the country, A.J. coordinates and supervises PharmD. students in their final year of studies.
