PPS Research Symposium Aug. 13-14

Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Fellows Showcase Latest Work in Areas Ranging from Alzheimer's to Cardiovascular Disease  

UH College of Pharmacy's Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceuticals Sciences will host its 3rd Annual PPS Research Symposium Aug. 13-14 in the Rockwell Pavilion at MD Anderson Library. 

The event showcases the latest work by UH graduate students and post-doctoral research associates in collaboration with UHCOP faculty advisors/supervisors and staff researchers as well as other collaborators at UH and other institutions.

Themed "Bringing Creativity, Knowledge and Innovation to Research," the symposium will feature the presentation of more than 40 research posters by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and more than a dozen selected oral presentations. Awards and travel support to future scientific meetings will be presented to the top presenters. 

Headlining the symposium will be internationally renowned neuroscientist Yasmin Hurd, Ph.D., who will present "The Vulnerable Brain: Insights into the Neurobiology of Addiction" at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, as the symposium's Scholar-in-Residence. She also will provide her perspective on careers in academia-based research in presentations and informal meetings with attendees.

In addition, the college will welcome back alumni to interact with and provide career guidances to students and post-docs and serve on the presentation judging panel alongside guest judges from fellow Houston academic research institutions. 

"The symposium represents the rebirth of a department tradition that had disappeared, an annual gathering of department faculty, staff and trainees at all levels, where research results are shared and ideas are exchanged in a lively atmosphere of scientific discovery," said PPS Department Chair Douglas Eikenburg, Ph.D.
