SSHP Mentoring Social Provides Venue for Tips and Advice in Pursuing Post-graduate Pharmacy Practice Residencies

With competition for post-graduate pharmacy practice residencies at an all-time high nationwide, the UH College of Pharmacy and Texas Southern University chapters of the Society of Health-System Pharmacists are continuing their efforts to help their fellow students develop the tools and knowledge to secure and succeed in a residency.

The 12th Annual Residency Mentoring Social Jan. 31 at the UH Alumni Center drew 85 students from the two institutions and more than 70 current residents and residency program directors representing 14 programs from across the Greater Houston area. The social featured a round-robin style format to allow students an opportunity to learn from representatives of multiple residency programs.

The keynote speaker for this year's social was the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists' lobbyist Brad Shields as well as remarks from two-time UHCOP alumna and Dean's Advisory Council member Mallory Gessner-Wharton, Pharm.D. ('11), M.S. ('13), director of pharmacy for Kingwood Medical Center and current president of the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Support for the social was provided by the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the UH Funding Activities Board.
