Infectious Diseases Specialists Vyain, Zasowski Join UHCOP's Department of Pharmacy Practice and Translational Research
UH College of Pharmacy recently welcomed two infectious diseases pharmacy specialists — Alexa Vyain, Pharm.D., AAHIVP, clinical assistant professor, and Evan J. Zasowski, Pharm.D., BCPS, clinical assistant professor — to its Department of Pharmacy Practice and Translational Research.
Vyain's primary research and clinical interests are focused on management of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and opportunistic infections. Vyain received her Pharm.D. from Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and completed a PGY1 residency at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla., and a PGY2 in HIV Ambulatory Care/Clinical Pharmacogenetics through UHCOP, Texas Children’s Hospital and Therapeutic Concepts. Vyain is certified as an HIV Pharmacist (AAHIVP) by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
Zasowski's research interests include epidemiology and clinical outcomes of patients with invasive antibiotic-resistant infections, predominantly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). Zasowski received his Pharm.D. from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Albany, N.Y. and completed a PGY1 residency at the University of Chicago Medicine in Chicago, Ill., and a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Anti-Infective Research Laboratory at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.
An advisory board member for the journal Infectious Diseases and Therapy, Zasowski has authored or coauthored publications in such journals as American Journal of Infection Control, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, and Pharmacotherapy. He is a past recipient of travel grant support to present his research at conferences from the American Society of Microbiology, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
