Medical Withdrawal/Emergency Withdrawal

If an emergency or medical condition is affecting a current semester, students certain about withdrawing should do so by the drop deadlines posted in the academic calendar to ensure the preferred grade of W. 
Review information under Dropping and Withdrawing from Course Enrollment.

If it is AFTER the posted semester withdrawal deadline, students may seek an emergency/medical withdrawal under qualified, documented emergency or medical circumstances. Approved withdrawals under this process do not provide financial recovery. Any eligible refunds are based on the effective date of withdrawal as it aligns with the UH refund policy. There is no special notation on the transcript referencing the medical/emergency withdrawal and any approved grades changes to W under this process will appear the same as W grades from courses dropped or withdrawn by the student within semester drop deadlines.

Approved requests are

  • submitted within deadline
  • documented qualified events and personal circumstances

Qualified events under a medical withdrawal, or emergency (non-medical) withdrawal, are documented events that

  • prevented the student from withdrawing by the posted deadlines
  • impeded academic progress
  • prevented the student from completing their coursework in the impacted semester.

Qualified personal circumstances include:

  • personal medical emergencies
  • death of an immediate family member
  • serving as primary caregiver to an immediate family member who is severely ill
  • legal matters involving detention

Medical/Emergency Withdrawal Deadlines for 2024
140 days from close of the impacted semester

Spring 2024

  • April 30, 2024 - recommended deadline
  • September 24, 2024 - final deadline

Summer 2024

  • July 31, 2024 - recommended deadline
  • December 31, 2024 - final deadline

Fall 2024

  • December 11, 2024 - recommended deadline
  • April 30, 2025 - final deadline

STEPS TO REQUEST EMERGENCY WITHDRAWAL

  1. Submit REQUEST for INFORMATION.
    If parent or family member, please contact our office directly for assistance, see FERPA privacy release information & student authorization form for release of information to parent/guardian
  2. Review UAA Documentation requirements.
  3. Check UH email for follow-up request for information and guidance on any next steps from staff. Decisions are not immediate, each request requires review and consideration of the request, academic record, circumstances, submitted documentation and appropriate academic action.
  4. Review answers to common questions on dropping and withdrawing courses.
  5. Medical Reinstatement - To request removal of Medical Withdrawal enrollment hold, submit Request for Reinstatement. Review UAA Documentation requirements linked above.
