UH Nursing Recognized for Diversity, Inclusion
Oct. 14, 2019
The University of Houston College of Nursing has been recognized nationally for its commitment to diversity and inclusion. For the fourth year in a row, INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine has bestowed the college with the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.
“Diversity is one of the strengths of the University and our College,” said Kathryn Tart, professor and founding dean. “We are honored to be recognized and proud of our continued commitment to excellence in nursing.”
The college was one of 42 health care schools or colleges in the nation to receive a Health Professions HEED Award. UH College of Nursing received the honor in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The award considers recruitment, retention of students and faculty, as well as leadership support for diversity and inclusion.
The college is located in Fort Bend County, one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation.
"It is important for nurses to mirror the population they serve. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing reports that nationally 34% of nurses represent minorities. This year, in our college we represent 75% minorities,” Tart said. “The outcomes for our students represent the excellence that is expected of nurses at a Tier One university--100% NCLEX-RN and Nurse Practitioner certification pass rates. We know that diversity and excellence are not mutually exclusive."
The University of Houston along with the UH Law Center also received recognition from the magazine this year as a top college or university for diversity.
