  NASA Awards UH $1.2 Million to Strengthen Diversity in STEM and Aerospace Engineering

  NASA is awarding the University of Houston $1.2 million to grow diversity initiatives in STEM and aerospace-related engineering fields and address barriers to access and success for historically underserved and underrepresented students. The award is for a project called the Partnership for Inclusivity in Engineering Education and Research for Space, also known as PIE ²RS, a synergistic collaboration between UH, UH-Clear Lake, NASA’s Johnson Space Center, the Boeing Company and the Greater Houston Partnership.

  UH Energy Hydrogen Symposium Report Highlights Gulf Coast Hydrogen Ecosystem Opportunities and Challenges

  The University of Houston’s Division of Energy and Innovation recently released an in-depth report titled “The Gulf Coast Hydrogen Ecosystem: Opportunities and Solutions,” following a similarly titled symposium focused on developing a successful Gulf Coast hydrogen ecosystem. The symposium hosted last spring by UH Energy, an umbrella for the University’s energy initiatives and programs, brought together industry experts, policymakers, and academics to explore the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

  UH’s Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine Welcomes New Dean

  The University of Houston has welcomed Dr. Jonathan McCullers as its new vice president of health affairs and the second dean of the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. McCullers succeeds Dr. Stephen Spann, Fertitta College of Medicine’s founding dean, who retired in August after four decades in medicine, including the last eight at UH. “It is a tremendous honor to be selected as the second dean of the Fertitta College of Medicine,” McCullers says.

  University of Houston Unveils Guideline to Enhance Treatment Access for Opioid Use Disorder in Community Pharmacies

  Pharmacists now have more guidance in combatting the opioid crisis and providing treatment to patients thanks to new national guidelines developed at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. The Pharmacy Access to Resources and Medication for Opioid Use Disorder Guideline, released today, addresses critical barriers in the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder across the nation’s community pharmacies. With approximately 2.7 million individuals in the U.S. affected by OUD, the need for effective management strategies has never been more urgent.

  Boosting Clean Energy with AI-Powered Catalysts and Microwave Plasma Technologies

  As the world races to combat environmental degradation and climate challenges, transitioning to renewable energy has become a top priority. However, the inconsistent nature of wind, solar and other renewable sources poses a significant challenge to maintaining a stable energy supply, which has slowed the transition. An interdisciplinary team of scientists is collaborating to find a workable solution by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and microwave plasma, and blending knowledge from chemistry, materials science and engineering.

  Doing the Dirty Work: UH Part of $7.9M Initiative to Promote Soil Health and Tackle Climate Change

  The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture has chosen a UH project as one of 12 nationwide aimed at improving soil health and productivity through innovative tools and techniques. The project will help develop a new nutrient management strategy to grow crops in poor-quality soils and to have higher resistance to climate change. Healthy soils are like vibrant ecosystems that support plant and animal life, improve water and air quality, and boost the overall health of plants, animals and people.
