In this invention, a novel antibacterial zwitterionic polyurethane was developed to form interdiffused coating films with commercialized acrylic polyurethanes. Bacterial attachment was substantially eliminated due to the hydrophilicity of the zwitterionic polyurethane. Long-term antibacterial property was observed for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria even when the coatings were constantly challenged by mechanical abrasion.
