Robotics Assisted Opening Systems and Methods
Recent offshore drilling activities have dramatically improved oil and gas production. Due to extreme weather, such as Hurricanes, offshore oil platforms should work under unmanned mode. As the industry has increasing intention to deploy robots in daily operation, the robots' adaptability to industrial environments has been examined by engineers and researchers, although the task is highly challenging.
Directed Robots and autonomous robots deploying tools to perform tasks/operations informed by smart positioning and diagnosis utilizing AI /deep learning opening doors/hatches, operating valves, assisting connection and removing parts while ensuring integrity. In this invention, a novel lightweight door opening tool is developed. The door opening tool employs a pawl mechanism which can divide a large circular motion into multiple repetitive linear motions with a large amount of opening torque. The tool is
able to deliver torque and manage reaction forces which are needed for watertight ship door opening.
The tool can be easily operated by the lightweight robotic arm mounted on a mobile unmanned‐ground vehicle (UGV). This will mostly decouple the physical tool task from the robotic platform and keep the robotic platform simple and lightweight (not heavier and more complex).
This invention demonstrates an innovative strategy to open a watertight ship door and transition through it. A prototype of the tool has been fabricated and tested. This work verified the possibility of the deploying robotic system in offshore platforms and other infrastructures where watertight ship doors are needed, including ships and ship shape structures, and provided a low cost and viable solution to enhance the robotic mobility in those environments.
