USE OF FERRITE MATERIALS FOR RF-INDUCED HEATING REDUCTION OF MEDICAL DEVICES
RF-induced heating near the electrodes of active implantable medical devices (AIMDs) is the limiting factor for a safe MRI scan. Many AIMDs are prohibited from MRI scan or scanned under restricted condition due to such RF-induced heating. However, re-engineering or re-design of AIMD leads for RF-induced heating reduction are not feasible due to mechanical requirements.
In this invention, a method of using ferrite materials to mitigate/reduce the RF-induced heating is proposed. This invention does not require the redesign of the AIMD system. Instead, ferrite magnetic rings are placed along the leads body of AIMDs during the implantation to mitigate the RF-induced heating from MR RF coil.
Ferrite magnetic rings can lead to large MR image artifacts and MR induced force. We have quantify these parameters as part of the invention.
