The Humana Institute is transforming health care professions’ education in multiple sectors. Specifically, for health professions students, the institute offers the following:

• Early on in their training, medical students engage in the Business of Health care Elective that exposes them to Value Based Care, health systems science and non-medical drivers of health. Because of this unique academic-industry partnership, students learn how physicians and payers work together to address social needs.
• Andy and Barbara Gessner Nursing students rotate through Humana Home Health clinics as well as CenterWell Senior Primary Care clinics. During their rotations, students shadow nurses and participate in discharge planning, medication reconciliation, and other aspects of patient care. Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students also complete the Value-Based Care (VBC) certification course.
• UH Social Work students are able to participate in virtual practicum with Humana, particularly helpful to those interested in becoming medical social workers. Additionally, students can leverage Humana data assets in health related social needs for their dissertation research.
• Through Humana’s Managed Care Pharmacy Residency program, the Institute fosters opportunities for PharmD students to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, supporting Humana Medicare and Medicaid members in achieving optimal health outcomes. Residents gain diverse experience across population health and pharmaceutical care within an integrated health plan and pharmacy benefit management setting, preparing them for successful careers in managed care pharmacy.

Non-health care professionals

Non-health care professional students are able to participate in SHERP and HIGH which provide hands-on experiences in community health, research, and innovation.
