STEM Scholarship Information

Eligibility
Applicant Criteria
- NSM Biology/Biochemistry, Chemistry, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Mathematics or Physics majors, including transfer students, who will be at the sophomore or junior level in Fall 2024.
- Completed a minimum of 30 credit hours. NOTE: Computer Science majors are NOT eligible for this award.
- U.S. citizen, U.S. national (as defined in Section 101 (a) of the Immigration and National Act), or an alien lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence.
Application Process/Materials to Submit
- Complete an online scholarship application demonstrating academic record and leadership potential. To apply, students should have a minimum cumulative UH or transfer GPA of 3.0. Students not meeting this qualification may be considered based on financial need, essay and reference letters.
- Demonstrate financial need as identified by FAFSA.
- Self-report cumulative GPA, a list of science and math courses completed, total number of credit hours completed, total number of credit hours completed at UH, total number of credit hours completed in the major, total number of credit hours completed in the major at UH and the major GPA. Note that self-reported information will be individually verified for all scholarship recipients.
- Prepare a 500-word or less essay discussing career goals, financial need for the scholarship, and challenges faced and strategies implemented to overcome these challenges. Applicants who are a part of the teachHOUSTON program will also include in their essay a description of why they have chosen to become a teacher.
- Provide two letters of recommendation, preferably from a university-level math/science instructor, highlighting your academic performance and leadership skills.
- Submit an unofficial UH transcript. Note that transcript information will be individually verified for all scholarship recipients.
Application Deadline - How to Apply
Applications for the Fall 2024 awards must be received by the close of the business day (5 p.m.) on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
- Complete the online STEM Scholarship application form.
- Application materials include the online STEM Scholarship application form, an unofficial UH transcript, required essay, and two letters of recommendation preferably from university-level math/science instructors highlighting your academic performance and leadership skills.
Acceptance of Award
Students accepting the scholarship will be required to sign an Acceptance Form agreeing to the terms of the scholarship which includes active participation in the scholarship program’s curricular and co-curricular activities which includes the PARENT Academy, S-SIG, bi-annual meetings, advisor/mentor meetings and a Scholar Information and Release Form.
Eligibility for Other Scholarships and Financial Aid
Recipients of the STEM Scholarship may apply for (and accept) other scholarships, grants, or awards for which the recipients are eligible. However, if a recipient applies for financial aid, these awards may be used in calculating the eligibility level of the recipient’s financial aid.
Scholarship Funds Disbursements
Scholarship funds will be deposited directly into the recipient’s student account each semester upon verification of enrollment, major, and minimum qualification requirements.
Forfeiture
Failure of the recipient to register for classes (at least 12 semester hours) by the twelfth class day will constitute an automatic forfeiture of the scholarship.
Maintaining the Scholarship
To maintain the scholarship, scholars must
- Have a cumulative UH GPA of 3.0
- Continue to demonstrate financial need as identified by FAFSA
