Introductory & Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences

The Experiential Program provides structured pharmacy experiences in diverse pharmacy practice settings beginning in the second year and continuing through the final year of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum.

The primary purpose of the introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences is to assure that each student develops the knowledge, technical skills, professional judgments, values, and competencies needed for pharmacy practice, in any setting, while ensuring optimal medication therapy and patient safety.

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE)

The Doctor of Pharmacy student will complete 320 hours of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences prior to their fourth year of pharmacy school.

Two Components of IPPE:

  • IPPE Introductory Community Pharmacy
A structured pharmacy practice experience for post P1 students in a community setting for four weeks in the summer after their P1 year.
  • IPPE Institutional Pharmacy
A structured pharmacy practice experience for post P2 students in a health- systems/institutional pharmacy setting in the summer after their P2 year.

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE)

The Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences consist of seven 6-week pharmacy practice experiences during the fourth year of pharmacy school. Doctor of Pharmacy students in APPEs participate under the supervision of registered pharmacist preceptors in a range of interprofessional patient-care activities in a variety of settings from ambulatory, community and institutional facilities.

National Association of Boards of Pharmacy

Founded in 1904, the NABP is the impartial professional organization that supports the state boards of pharmacy in protecting public health. NABP aims to ensure the public's health and safety through its pharmacist license transfer and pharmacist competence assessment programs, as well as through its VIPPS, Vet-VIPPS, VAWD, and DMEPOS accreditation programs.

NABP administers the NAPLEX to all pharmacy graduates and it is this examination that provides assurance that pharmacists applying to the board for licensure have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely practice entry-level pharmacy. For more information, visit https://nabp.pharmacy/.
