Career Development

C-REP will encourage you to define and pursue your career goals by first creating an initial individual development plan using a web-based career-planning tool tailored to meet the need of your scientist. As a working document, your mentor will guide you as you work toward your career goals.

Scientific Writing Workshops

We have partnered with Axiom Scientific Communication to provide trainees with a scientific writing professional development workshop series.

The ability to effectively communicate your ideas in writing is a critical component to scientific success. Graduate level C-REP trainees can take advantage of interactive scientific writing workshops. In these workshops, trainees will identify and evaluate key components of effective scientific writing. Trainees will analyze their writing to enhance clarity in communicating your own scientific ideas.

Specific workshops will focus on writing NIH F- and K- fellowships. You will learn to design a personalized grant writing timeline, learn about overall grant organization and NIH grant-scoring criteria in order to increase your chances of being awarded a fellowship.

New Course: Technologies for Cancer Drug Discovery and Development

This course for graduate students covers a variety of disciplines and topics important to cancer drug discovery and development. The course starts by covering pharmacology and basic cancer biology. Then the course transitions to introductions to assay design, lead compound identification, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutics. Finally, preclinical animal models and clinical assessments are presented. The course is taught by instructors from Baylor College of Medicine, UH, and Texas A&M University's The Institute of Biosciences and Technology.

The course is offered by Baylor in the spring term and is available to students at UH and other institutions within the Texas Medical Center. Registration uses the Inter-Institutional Course Registration Form. Note that Baylor is on the quarter system, so interested students should register early since the course starts in early January.
