Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS): Moving towards a Sustainable Energy Future 2023 – 2024 ENERGY SYMPOSIUM SERIES | CRITICAL ISSUES IN ENERGY
Wednesday, April 3, 2024 | 5:00PM-7:00PM
The University of Houston continued efforts to lead the energy conversation as last month, the Center for Carbon Management in Energy and UH Energy continued the 2023-24 Critical Issues in Energy Symposium Series with timely discussion centered around successful commercial deployment of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS).
Titled “Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS): Moving towards a Sustainable Energy Future”, the event brought together academia, industry and future professionals to discuss several key items for consideration as it relates to broad CCUS deployment.
Moderated by Charles McConnell, executive director of the CCME at the University of Houston, panel discussion was led by: Michael Templin, Senior Director Business Development - CCUS at Worley; Nishadi Davis, Head of Carbon Advisory – Americas, Wood; and Brian Green, Vice President of Carbon Storage, Drax Group.
Key takeaways included:
- Energy needs of the world will continue to grow especially in developing countries in Asia and Africa. Hence, energy that is affordable, reliable and environmentally conscious is the way forward.
- Fossil fuels will continue to be part of the energy mix and the focus should be on reducing emissions.
- CCUS is not a one-stop solution for energy transition but nonetheless a vital one, as evidenced by targeted policies governments have enacted/supported in the United States and abroad to drive adoption across industries.
- Stakeholder engagement is crucial, clear and honest engagement with community where this projects will be located.
