Major Requirements
Majors must meet the general baccalaureate requirements and complete a minimum of 30 semester hours in political science, in addition to the state-mandated courses in American government, GOVT 2306 and GOVT 2305 or equivalents. At least 24 semester hours of the total required must be at the 3000 level or above, and of these advanced hours, at least 15 semester hours must be taken in residence.
Advanced hours should be taken as soon as possible after completing GOVT 2306 and GOVT 2305, and must include three hours of political theory from POLS 3310, 3348 or 3349; three hours of methodology from POLS 3312 or 3316; and six hours of international affairs from POLS 3309, 3311, 3313, 3315, 3333 or 3336. The remaining hours would include 12 credits of advanced political science electives (3000/4000) and six hours of any level political science electives. No more than six total semester hours of grades of D in political science will be applied toward degree requirements in the major. No more than six semester hours of special problems courses and/or internships may be used to satisfy any major requirements in political science.
Students must earn a 2.0 minimum cumulative grade point average in courses attempted in the major at the University. Students are encouraged to distribute coursework in political science over several of the following areas: American politics, comparative politics, international politics, public administration, public law, political theory and methodology.

Political Science Minor, University of Houston at Sugar Land
The political science department offers a rotation of courses at the Sugar Land campus allowing students to complete the political science minor within two years (or less). Courses are taught in the evening in hybrid format. The courses scheduled for Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 are:
