Elevate. Innovate.
Advancing Cognitive Health Equity
The Collaborative on Aging Research and Multicultural Assessment (CARMA) is dedicated to improving cognitive health outcomes through culturally responsive research, mentorship, and community engagement.
Founded by Dr. Luis D. Medina in 2018, CARMA brings together researchers and trainees with a shared vision of equity, innovation, and collaboration.
What We Study
Our research centers on the cultural neuroscience of cognitive aging, recognizing that cognition is inherently shaped by cultural and linguistic experiences. We investigate how contextual factors—including social, structural, and environmental influences—affect cognitive health and neuropsychological assessment, with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD).
Our Mission & Values
- Cultural Responsiveness – Integrating cultural and linguistic diversity into research and practice.
- Fairness & Opportunity – Ensuring access to resources and fostering participation across diverse communities.
- Collaborative Mentorship – Fostering growth through structured, tiered mentorship.
- Scientific Rigor & Innovation – Advancing high-quality, community-engaged research.
