Biography
Jonathan A. McCullers, M.D.
Jonathan A. McCullers, M.D., grew up in the Tidewater area of Virginia and attended the University of Virginia as an undergraduate. He received his medical degree and did his internship and residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. McCullers moved to Memphis in 1996 for a Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship in the joint St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital / Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital program, receiving his laboratory research training from Dr. Robert Webster. He was named a St. Jude Scholar in the Physician Scientist Development Program in 1999, joining the St. Jude faculty and the Department of Infectious Diseases. After 15 years managing a translational research laboratory studying influenza viruses and bacterial pneumonia, McCullers was recruited to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and Le Bonheur in 2012 to lead the Department of Pediatrics. The research laboratories McCullers directed have pursued investigations related to virology, bacterial pathogenesis, and innate immunity in an effort to better understand the mechanisms underlying co-infections in the lung involving pandemic viruses. He has been honored with multiple awards and has published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles. In addition to his duties at Le Bonheur as Chair of Pediatrics from 2012 to 2024, he served the UTHSC College of Medicine as Senior Executive Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs and Chief Operating Officer from 2019 to 2024. In September of 2024, McCullers assumed the roles of Dean of the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine and Vice President of Health Affairs at the University of Houston, where he will help grow the medical school and enhance health research across the University.
