Office of Academic Support

The Office of Academic Support (OAS) assists students in their transition into medical school and fosters a positive and supporting learning environment. Students are successful in their transition to new learning environments when they are actively engaged in the experience. A major goal of OAS is to strengthen and maintain a quality academic support system to ensure that our graduates can practice medicine safely and competently.

The work of a medical student is often rewarding but also can be taxing and challenging. It helps greatly to have personal and academic support throughout the process. OAS’s mission is to continuously improve programs, services and initiatives to help students navigate the academic and social hurdles of medical school.

OAS provides support for all students in several areas:

  • Academic success skills - critical thinking, learning and study skills, early detection of at-risk academic status, concept mapping, test-taking skills and reflection
  • Personal and professional skills - time management, goal setting, self-development, communication skills, developing a study schedule and stress management
  • Content knowledge - academic performance monitoring and individual academic counseling
  • Program-related elements - program expectations, professional behavior and culture of medicine
