Vinh-Son Nguyen, M.D.
Vinh-Son Nguyen, M.D., is a Psychiatry Assistant Clerkship Director and adjunct faculty member in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. His primary role is to design and implement clerkship didactics, curriculum, and learning objectives for Phase 2 medical students in collaboration with clerkship directors. Nguyen also recruits and manages a network of clinical preceptors and teaching sites. He provides mentorship and academic advising to medical students and participates in their assessment and grading.
His work focuses on advancing medical education and promoting mental health literacy, with a passion for community engagement and outreach, especially in underserved communities. Nguyen has extensive leadership experience, serving as the outpatient psychiatry chief at Boston Children's Hospital and as a project leader for the South East Asia Pediatric Hematology Oncology (SEAPHO) project in Vietnam, where he collaborated with Vin Medical University and pediatric hospitals to increase mental health literacy among medical students and residents.
Nguyen received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Health San Antonio, Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, where he was a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed residency in psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Nguyen has received numerous awards and held several prestigious fellowships, including the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry Fellow (2023) and the American Psychiatric Association SAMHSA Minority Fellow (2022). As a fellow, he utilized photography to educate high school students about mental health topics, comparing the experiences of refugee and non-refugee youth. He has co-authored two chapters in the Disaster Psychiatry Textbook, 2nd Edition, on human migration and the historical and sociocultural considerations of disasters and mental health. He has also been published in various peer-reviewed journals and has presented at conferences across the world.
