Biography
RAN AN, PH.D.
Ran An, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences for the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. In addition, he is an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering.
Previously, An worked as a research engineer/field service engineer for ApoCell, Inc. (now Precision for Medicine). He also served as a microfluidics engineer in advanced research and development for LI-COR Biosciences.
His current research focuses on the development, clinical translation, and potential commercialization of electrokinetic and electrochemical-driven microfluidic biosensors for rapid and affordable point-of-care disease diagnostics and monitoring. His research also includes organ-on-chip functional assays to facilitate fundamental understanding of disease pathophysiology, drug testing, and personalized health care with a specific interest in human microcirculatory health.
An has been an author on several peer-reviewed articles and patents which have been licensed and commercialized by leading biotechnology companies. He has received multiple research and training grants from National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), Center for Advancing Point of Care Technologies (CAPCaT), and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). In addition, An has won the K25 Career Development Award, Technology Accelerator Challenge Award for Global Disease Diagnostics, and T32 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
He holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Beijing University of Chemical Technology. An earned his doctorate and master’s degree in chemical engineering from Michigan Technological University. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in mechanical & aerospace engineering at Case Western Reserve University.
