Maryam Vasefi, Ph.D., serves as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. She is responsible for the nervous system portions of the Biomedical Science curriculum and contributes to Clinical Anatomy and Human Development.

Previously, Vasefi received training at the Robarts Research Institute, focusing on investigating glutamate signaling pathways to identify novel targets for developing small molecule inhibitors as potential drug candidates for treating Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, she contributed to research efforts at Lamar University, concentrating on cell signaling, particularly in the context of Alzheimer's disease, alongside conducting clinical meta-analysis studies. Furthermore, Vasefi has undertaken various teaching training programs and acquired multiple certificates to enhance her pedagogical expertise in academia. These initiatives have been instrumental in augmenting her teaching capabilities and fostering a dynamic learning environment for students. Vasefi's expertise extends to academia, where she has developed and instructed a diverse array of subjects including medical neuroscience, psychopharmacology, anatomy & physiology, and genetics.

She completed her doctorate degree in Neuroscience at the School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo. Vasefi has published numerous research and journal articles and has frequently presented at conferences across the nation. She is the recipient of prestigious grants such as National Science Foundation (NSF) and has served as a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Alzheimer’s Association. Vasefi is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and the Alzheimer’s Association in the Houston and Southeast Texas Chapter.
